Experience Migration

Project: Experience Migration

2018 Merit Award for Design-Unbuilt

Presented to Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Conservation Biology Institute

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park and Conservation Biology Institute are 2018 Merit Award Winners for their project, ‘Experience Migration’. The project creates an immersive, multisensory experience about the charismatic diversity of birds. Birds are in trouble worldwide and as species decline or disappear, this project takes a deliberate step inspire and engage visitors in an educational journey. Experience Migration is unique among public realm projects because the Zoo’s project team lead is a landscape architect. The high level of collaboration between animal care staff, ornithologists and designers led to pairing an integrated public realm with a re-imagined program that positively engages the public in understanding what’s at stake in saving migratory birds.
