The Edward B. Ballard Scholarship Fund was established by the Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 2001 to honor the legacy of Mr. Ballard’s distinguished professional career and service as a chapter member. The scholarship provides academic support for students of University of Maryland, and Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center. It is supported by Chapter member donations and resources and stewarded by the Chapter’s Executive Committee.
The Potomac Chapter recognizes a student(s) in Landscape Architecture that demonstrate potential to produce a distinguished record of academic achievement and creative activity in contribution to the collective body of knowledge of the Landscape Architecture community. Any student(s) enrolled at the University of Maryland Landscape Architecture program or Virginia Tech’s Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center is eligible as a recipient.
Interested parties are required to provide the following for consideration. Four (4) paper copies of application materials on 8.5×11 paper size only as follows: a. Cover letter including name, address and contact information. b. Written essay that discusses the applicant’s scholarly interest(s). Single page/one-side maximum length. c. Resume. Single page/one side maximum length. d. Portfolio of academic work. Five (5) page, one-side maximum length. e. One (1) electronic copy on CD or on a thumb drive in pdf format.
The submission application deadline, including supporting materials – is not later than 11:00 AM PM Eastern Daylight Time on March 27, 2020. Incomplete applications and applications that do not conform to submission requirements or applications received after the submission application deadline will not be considered for the award. Recipients are required to attend the Potomac Chapter’s Annual Awards Gala. Non-attendance will result in disqualification of submission and (if selected) award.
At discretion of a selection committee composed of members of the ASLA Potomac Chapter, and related design disciplines awards ranging from $500-$2,500 will be provided based on availability of funds and the number and quality of applicants. At discretion of the selection committee, recipients may also be asked to present their work in a public forum as a guest speaker at future Chapter events. Notification of awards will be provided by the week of April 13, 2020. Awards will be presented at the 2020 Potomac Chapter Annual Awards Gala on May 14, 2020.
