Congratulations to M-NCPPC Montgomery County Department of Parks, Park Development Division for the Renovation of Kemp Mill Urban Park and winning a Merit award in the Design – Built category.
Kemp Mill Urban Park is a vibrant gathering place in a densely populated, culturally diverse community. While heavily used, the park’s infrastructure remained largely untouched from the time it opened in 1970 and most amenities had deteriorated beyond repair.
The project team was tasked with reimagining the park to meet current standards and regulations while retaining all the essential program elements the community has enjoyed over the years. The park renovation resulted in an iconic and inviting space deliberately designed as a multi-generational public place.
A central water feature is surrounded by dense native and naturalized vegetation. Plant material was carefully selected to provide seasonal interest and food sources for local pollinator and bird species. A new playground provides opportunities for children of all ages and abilities. Connecting these elements is a network of accessible pathways and overlooks.
The jury comments that “Kemp Mill Urban Park’s redesign is an example of how thoughtful design can be transformative to places and communities.”
